LADY MOURNING sofia lasserrot.jpg

A theatre production based on the Spanish novella The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes and of His Fortunes and Adversities; which was published anonymously because of its heretical content in 1554. It is considered a masterpiece of the Golden Age literature, which gave way to the picaresque novel genre.
It is set in the 16th century and tells the adventures of Lázaro de Tormes, building an ironic and harsh portrait of society at the time in a realistic, moralising and pessimistic tone.

This particular production is an interpretation of the novella from a Magic Realism perspective.
Magic Realism is an aesthetic style in which magical elements are blended into a realistic atmosphere in order to access a deeper understanding of reality; related but distinctive from surrealism because it focus on the actual existence of things in the material world, (not so subconscious).
